A Healthy Vagina

Vaginal discharge is normal – most women and girls get it. It’s a fluid or mucus that keeps the vagina clean and moist and protects it from infection.

A healthy vagina is naturally acidic with a low pH of approximately 3.8 – 4.5. This natural acidity is maintained by lactic acid producing bacteria known as lactobacilli. These bacteria flourish in an acidic environment and form a very important part of the natural defences, acting as a barrier to infections.

Bacterial Vaginosis

The most common cause of recurring vaginal infection is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV).

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by a change in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.

BV Develops where there is an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria replacing the ‘normal’ bacteria (lactobacilli) that is present in the vagina.

The main symptoms of BV are:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Discharge with an unpleasant fishy odour.
  • Change in discharge consistency & colour.

There are a number of conditions that may upset the natural acidity of the vagina, these include:

  • fluctuating hormones due to menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause.
  • antibiotics
  • sexual intercourse (semen is alkaline)
  • intrauterine devices
  • smoking
  • douching

Relactagel is a lactic acid gel that is clinically proven to:

  • Treat Bacterial Vaginosis
  • Prevent Bacterial Vaginoses Recurrence
  • Relieves abnormal discharge.
  • Relieves unpleasant odour.
  • Restores and maintains natural pH.

Relactagel contains lactic acid which is used to restore and maintain the natural acidity of the vagina.

The lactic acid provides an environment favourable to the growth of lactobacilll.

Relactagel also contains glycogen which provides nutrients for lactic acid bacteria.
